To go along with Josh's Geography course next year (11th grade), I'm putting together a list of potential books to read along with our study. ( the * denotes books I've read myself; if it is not marked then no pre-reading has been done.)
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond (how geography shaped civilization)*
Kon Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl. (famous book on crossing the Pacific as early man might have)*
The Path to Rome by Hilaire Belloc (trek through Northern Europe/Alps)*
The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz (might be a fictional account but man escapes from Siberian prison camp and walks to India!)*
A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins (and its sequel) (I read the first book when I was a teen and loved it Very in depth look at America).*
Riding the Iron Rooster (Paul Theroux travels through China)*
The Lost City of Z by David Grann (Amazonian Explorers)*
I'd like something that focuses on Africa or a couple of different parts of Africa. Perhaps Out of Africa* by Isak Dinesen or West with the Night by Beryl Markham. It would be nice to get some women writers in here.
Walkabout for Australia? (I'm not sure about this one.) Maybe something by Nevil Shute*.
Endurance; Shackleton's Incredible Journey about Antarctica.*
