Another free Wodehouse on my Kindle. I think this was entitled Three Men and a Maid when it was published in England. Samuel Marlowe bumps into (or rather is bitten by) the girl of his dreams (or rather her dog) while crowding onto the boat that is to take him back to England. But, it turns out her recent ex-fiance is one and the same as Marlowe's cousin and cabin mate. And then there's a Bream Mortimer who accompanies her every where. He's in love with her too and he's the son of her father's lawyer and business partner. And Wilhelmina (Billie) Bennett is waiting for her Galahad and can't stand when a man is made to look ridiculous. Many, many complications ensue. They involve a bulldog named Smith, the mumps, a woman big game hunter named Jane, a famous author of Theosophy and her beautiful home of Windles, and a sentimental and very helpful valet named Webster.
I do think this was my least favorite Wodehouse so far. Maybe I am reading too many at once and their alikeness is dulling the pleasure. Maybe this one wasn't quite as hysterical at the others. It was still a very pleasant read, with very funny moments and clever, droll writing.
