Check out this family run website that lists all the great books they've encountered. This is from a large, long-time homeschooling family of readers, and every book is one they, the parents, have approved! If you don't have time to preread everything for your kids, here is a reliable resource. I am acquainted with some of the members of this lovely family.
N.B. I don't agree with them on their assessment of Harry Potter, but even though they might be a little more conservative than I am in choosing books, I still find this resource to be excellent.
