The Light of Christ - Book 12

He is risen!  Alleluia!

I started reading this book months ago.  It was my morning meditation, but I could only read a sentence or a paragraph at most each time because my dog required so much of my morning attention.  And then I'd go a week or two when I'd forget to even read that much.  Midway through Lent I realized what a lousy Lent I seemed to be having, so I vowed to only read spiritual reading until Easter.  Thus I picked up my pace.  I still couldn't read much at a time though and take it all in.  In fact, I am sure I did not take it all in, it is such a rich, profound book.  Father White writes in a crystal clear but very dense way.  There is no extraneous wording.  He doesn't write in a particularly formal way, he is very accessible, it is just that he is talking about such profound things in such an erudite way, that I just couldn't breeze through it.  Every sentence practically had me pondering eternal things and deep questions.

So much of catechesis these days is really shallow and watered down.  This is not!!!  I found this book to be a really rejuvenating one in terms of belief in the teachings of the Catholic Church.  My faith or my desire for my faith has been deeply shaken by the last round of corruption and perversion in the Church.  I don't know whom to trust.  But the brilliant, faithful, wise and learned teachings that have come down to us from the Church fathers and built up by the great saints and theologians that form her magisterium is indelible truth.  This is what I trust.

This too shall pass.  The Church has always had sinful members, sinful players in her history.  It started with Judas.  The spirit of this godless age has infiltrated her, the smoke of Satan.  We are battling that now.  But this book made me feel less estranged because of her unfaithfulness.  It paints the bigger picture. It helped me step back and look at the broader horizon of salvation history.  And that made me love the Church again because I love her founder, Jesus Christ.
