Death in the Stocks by Georgette Heyer is a fun, well-written, humorous and intelligent murder mystery. It is very much in the genre of an Agatha Christie mystery being British and set vaguely in the 1920's or so. A wealthy mine owner is found stabbed to death with his feet stuck in the old stocks of a country village commons. We meet his eccentric half-siblings Antonia and Kenneth, their cousin Giles, a solicitor who represents them, Antonia's fiancee who worked for the dead man and a long thought dead brother who suddenly shows up. And then there is Kenneth's beautiful fiancee. This mystery is termed an Inspector Hannasyde mystery (a recurring Scotland Yard detective in Heyer's mysteries) but he really doesn't solve the mystery at all!
A very charming story with lots of great dialogue.
Two thumbs up if you want an enjoyable cozy mystery to get lost in. I thought a lot of the book read almost like a play and in my head I had fun imagining how to stage it!
