- walked, ran, played in the beautiful fall weather this week
- read: The Frost is on the Punkin by James Whitcomb Riley, The Creed in Slow Motion, Exploring the World of Physics, A Little History of the World, Son of Neptune, My Side of the Mountain. Rick is reading a biography of Steve Jobs and keeps regaling us with stories. What a peculiar fellow!
- Ate lots of Halloween candy and lots of carry out this week. Not a good food week!
- Focused on math, handwriting, Latin
- Becky is writing a novel!
- Sean continues to write comic strips with his friend
- Josh wrote an essay for his Shakespeare class on Much Ado About Nothing
- Josh went to Chemistry class (got 92 on his test), Latin (100% on quiz), didn't do so well on his Precalc homework - needs to rework that, went to CLC, practiced running; will be in a race this coming Sunday.
- Sean's getting a math tutor and a drawing tutor, it looks like! Yippee. Keeping him busy is so very important to his emotional health.
- Josh and Sean took a long walk yesterday morning. Josh was cheering Sean up. Sean came home in a much better mood.
- I really like being able to work one on one with Sean. Need to get a better working relationship with Becky.
- Had a meeting with Aquinas Learning staff trying to regroup after our blow last week.
- Becky seems to be enjoying Life of Fred. I have to sit down and read it too, to see what's going on.
- Also need to catch up with Sean in Journey to the Center of the Earth.
- Josh is in class all day today from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00. He's going to a Chem lab early, then a regular Chem class, then off to Shakespeare which usually ends at 2:30 but those that want to can stay and watch Much Ado About Nothing.
- Tonight Rick and I are going to dinner to celebrate our 23rd anniversary (which is actually tomorrow). I'm hoping the actual day is just a relaxed, family day.

What We've Been Up To - 10/28/11
It was a rough week emotionally. We had a messy occurrence when a family we'd been having trouble with abruptly decided to pull out of our Aquinas Learning Center. Since we are such a small group this had a very bad impact on the whole thing. Basically, Becky's 4th-6th grade class collapsed. The whole reason I got involved in this was for Becky, so she could do 'school' one day a week. She loved it. So big, huge bummer there all around. Really quite heartbreaking.
Monday - being so stressed out about what was coming down in re our Center, I played hooky from Latin class. I'd done all the homework and everything, but I just was way too tired (bad insomnia from stress) and I just needed a mental health day to slow down and do stuff at home. The weekend had been very busy and I just feel like I'm running, running, running constantly. So Monday was nice. I read aloud a lot to the younger kids, we did some math and Latin. I've started reading A Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich to Sean and we are both enjoying it. It was nice to have a slow day. We even managed to clean bedrooms and tidy up the house a bit. I went grocery shopping while Becky was at her American Heritage Girls group in the afternoon. That was something that usually happens on the weekends but didn't because we were so busy.
Tuesday - Josh had Chemistry and x country, Becky had art. Gee, I can't really remember Tuesday other than that!
Wednesday - made it to Latin. Great class. Josh had CLC. Becky did not have band class which was wonderful! LOL!
Thursday - we went ahead and had our Aquinas Learning day as the K-3 classes are still good. I wound up being the preschool teacher the whole day. Did I mention the preschool leader (a teenage girl we hired) no longer can make it. Her parents want her to focus on her studies. Seems being gone all day Thursday was just taking too much time. Plus one of our mentors was sick! So it was a crazy day, but I think we pulled it off well. I left all three kids at home all day. I can't do that anymore. Sean was so bored and depressed by the end of the day. Josh slacked off. Only Becky seemed okay with it. I called home at one point and asked her what she was doing. She said she was writing a novel! She'd only got as far as the first paragraph though! She read it to me. It is about 4 kids; one of them is in a boarding school! She also was reading Life of Fred off and on all day. And she says when playing by the pond out back she saw a coyote! Scared her to death! We do have coyotes in this area, so, wow! Josh went to x country. And then about 8:30 p.m. Sean and I headed over to a local church that had the relics of St. Margaret Mary Alocoque visiting. We just went in, stood in line, prayed for about half a minute before the relics and then came home. Sean was so sad from being bored all day. He again is wondering if he should go to school.
Today is Friday - the weather has gotten much cooler. We are supposed to have tennis today, if the weather allows. Seano wants to do the Trunk or Treat with the parish youth group tonight. Josh was supposed to go to the postponed corn maize trip with the teen homeschool group, but instead he is going to stay home and try and get back on track with his precalculus class. He's falling behind. At this rate he'll be doing precalc for two years, like he did Algebra II! Yikes! The kid is a master procrastinator!

What We've Been Up To - 10/21/11
Good things: poetry, Knox's The Creed in Slow Motion (my kids LOVE this; starts many great, deep discussions), Exploring the World of Physics, reading Sunday scripture out loud on Fridays.
All of the above happen in the morning over breakfast.
Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery - Sean, Josh and I are all enjoying this.
Read alouds: finished The Penderwicks and Treasure Island this week. I've decided to start reading aloud to Sean. Rick's been reading to Becky and that seems to be their province now, but Sean still needs a good read aloud at night, I've decided. Sean told me he's started reading a book at night! He has not picked up a book on his own for months! It's The Gospel According to The Simpsons. He says it's pretty good.
Copy work for Becky - the copy work from Aquinas Learning is going well with her. Her cursive is coming along nicely. I've decided that Sean also needs to work on his penmanship. In fact, I'm back to all three of the kids doing this. Josh voluntarily wanted to and I got him the Write Now book to work from. He wants to be able to write faster and he wanted to do connected italics instead of cursive.
Sean is writing on the computer a lot. He comes up with ideas and the words for his friend's comics. His friend draws them and then they put them up on their Deviant Art account.
Journey to the Center of the Earth. Sean and I are still battling through this book. I can't wait til it's over and I can say that Sean read a bona fide classic. I think, in spite of the struggle, he'll be proud of himself.
Sean keeps saying he wants to study history. I can't activate my This Week in History Account but I sent an email in, hopefully they can fix that and we'll start next week.
I'm thinking of getting a math tutor for Sean. Let's face it, I'm a lousy math teacher and I'm so distracted I don't keep up. We are really thinking of sending Sean to school next year, therefore I really think it is necessary for him to stick to both math and Latin. This week he took all morning to take his math test and he didn't do well. He just wasn't focusing I could tell and that's probably most of the problem. But he truly needs structure. For the older kids, having a tutor once a week was great at making them sit down and do their math. And in the end they were grateful for this bit of discipline inserted into their lives. The tutor has to be able to come to the house though. I just can't drive one more place every week! I'll snap like a rubber band! Or I might as well move into the car permanently!
Becky tried out band class again. She was crying as we went in so I told her we could bail. This was supposed to be fun and not something she dreaded. But to my surprise she said she'd do it. She's completely overwhelmed by it and all the other kids are more advanced than her. I'm thinking we drop it and again get someone to come to the house to teach her. We'll see. I'll let thing percolate for a couple days and then we'll talk. If she voluntarily starts practicing then I know she's into it.
Latin is hard but going well. We are really getting deep into Latin, deeper than I've ever gone into another language. But it is hard and I know I should be spending an hour a week just reviewing everything learned up to this point. We are getting ready for a test soon, so that will help with the review stuff. Josh has sort of woken up and started to participate more. I think, as painful as it is, meeting for class twice a week, instead of once, is really a boon to study. But it is very challenging.
Aquinas Learning - Becky was loving the social component of this, but there was some big blow out yesterday among the 4-6th grade kids, with Becky ending up in tears. She was in a terrible mood for most of the day. I don't know what happened. Sigh, the joys of socialization! I do like the structure it gives our week. She's good at doing her activity sheets. We don't go over the memory sentences like we should. I have to say I am coming to hate IEW. It is the most unnatural way to learn writing that I can think of. And it treats children like they have no innate writing ability whatsoever. Writing has to be broken down absurdly and presented in a rather silly fashion. And the little paragraphs that the kids have to rewrite are not particularly well written. Give me Susan Wise Bauer's Writing With Ease any day of the week over IEW.
Josh truly seems to enjoy both Chemistry and Psychology. He's neutral about PreCalc. Shakespeare, he wants to like but the amount of work is overwhelming and he let himself get behind and hasn't caught up, so it has become a drag. I helped him with his homework yesterday. And he's working on performing his Monologue tomorrow for class.
He's sticking in there with his cross country. He doesn't practice at home like he should though. He's got his next race this coming Sunday. I'm helping which means a long afternoon (4 or 5 hours). I"m bringing a folding chair! I can't stand for that long!
Today I hope to play catch up with stuff that has slid through the cracks. Josh gets to sleep in a bit this a.m. Chemistry doesn't start until 10 today instead of 8:30.

What We've Been Up To - 10/15/11
Just have a few minutes to post!
Becky - decided to try out Life of Fred this week, so I ordered them. We took the week off from math since she really seemed to be getting such a negative attitude toward it. Life of Fred arrived but she didn't even glance at the books. We'll try again on Monday. Becky had a full week though with American Heritage Girls nature hike on Monday (where we learned about the mnemonic device for knowing scientific classification: King Philip Came Over for Good Soup. On Tuesday she went to art class and continued her sunflower watercolor painting. Wednesday she started band with her trumpet. She was not happy with it however, as she found out there is only one other girl that she didn't know (she was hoping kids from the summer music camp would be there) and she was the only child out of the 5 there who couldn't read music. I don't know if we'll continue with it, or if it would be better to just get trumpet lessons. She did a lot of impromptu art this week also. She also continued to read Goosebump stories as well as rereading all the American Girl Samantha books. We worked a tiny bit on copywork and she also did her IEW homework for Aquinas Learning. Thursday was Aquinas day, which she just loves. She now peppers me all the time with how to say this and that word in French. She still has a lingering cough. Darn that cough. Tennis on Friday was cancelled due to rain.
Sean - Poor Sean. He is so terminably bored yet he doesn't want to really do anything. Stuck between a rock and a hard place. He did do some math but he seems to have completely misunderstood equivelent fractions. I have to sit down and clarify that with him at some point very soon. He did a bit of Latin, reluctantly. He did decide that for his 4H project he wants to design his own point and click video game based on holidays. It would have an Easter bunny actually searching for easter eggs (a pun on easter eggs in videogames) and it would be all mixed up with santa and the tooth fairy and other fun things. He needs to something community-wise with it. Maybe teaching others how to make a videogame or having sick kids in a hospital try it out??? Sean read more in Journey to the Center of the Earth. Slowly but surely we'll get through this book! He's ahead of me now, so I've got to catch up this weekend. Sean really wanted to go to the Jr. High activity on Friday evening. Since he so seldom really wants to do anything, I made sure he got there. He really likes it, even though he thinks some of it is silly. So that was a good thing. He also says he really wants to learn history by research. So this weekend I've got to set up This Week in History. I think he'll really like it. He also enjoyed learning more from Exploring the World of Physics. And we did another lesson in Harry Stottlemeier and he really enjoys that.
Josh - poor Josh! He has let himself get very behind in certain subjects. At the beginning of the year ( 6 weeks ago!) he was all gung ho, but he lost traction after getting so sick a couple of weeks ago and he hasn't gotten his footing. He's been spending a lot of time (a lot!) in front of the computer just entertaining himself and neglecting his duties). I have to admit I got angry with him on Wednesday night. But he took it okay and I do think it was a little bit of a kick in the rear to set him back on the right course. He had to miss CLC on Wednesday because we got stuck in a terrible traffic jam trying to get Becky to band and it made it impossible to get him to CLC. That hurt him because he really looks forward to CLC. I want to make sure that doesn't happen again. Anyway, I am determined that Josh needs to take ownership of his own life. He relies too much on me to nag him and keep him on track and I am just too scattered to do a good job. He needs to learn to do it himself.

What We've Been Up To 9/23/11
Another crazy week. I'm really exhausted. I hope this weekend I can spend most of it putzing around my house and maybe tidying and organizing a little bit. I really need that.
Monday - read The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere to the kids, along with more from the book about the Mass. Went to Latin class and took another quiz on 3rd declension nouns and adjectives. Got 100% Josh did pretty well but not quite up to my standard LOL. Sean and Becky did a little math, Sean did some Latin. Becky and I focused on the activity sheets from Aquinas Learning, dealing with Latin roots, the Declaration of Independence. Josh's friend who is now driving, picked him up and they went to Mass in the evening. That was pretty cool. Rick left for CA.
Tuesday - Read more from Exploring the World of Physics. We said a whole rosary together. Took 50 minutes because Becky kept wanting to lead. Drove me crazy! LOL! Probably not the feeling one is supposed to come away with after praying the rosary! Did more math and Latin. Worked on activity sheets with Becky. Josh went to Chemistry but unfortunately messed up and didn't get his homework in. Josh did cross country practice. Was a beautiful afternoon.
Wednesday - Another Latin quiz. This time Josh got 100% and I didn't. Totally forgot how to add onto the stem of 5th declension and misspelled it all the way through. At least I was consistent! Sean had a playdate over at his friends house. Josh had his "passing Mass" at his Catholic Life Community. Becky and I went. About 20 boys were moving up into various levels of CLC. Josh is now a full member. Becky and I finished reading through the activity sheets for Aquinas but didn't actually finish them.
Thursday - Aquinas Learning day - things went pretty well; still working out the kinks. Sean did math and Latin and read Journey to the Center of the Earth and then hung out in the library with Josh in the afternoon. Josh did precalculus and Psychology and then worked on Shakespeare homework at the library. Josh had cross country practice. He is really enjoying running so much. Then we got home to find Rick had come home from CA. Pizza night! Then Josh worked on chemistry homework but this time didn't finish his Shakespeare homework. Hmmm. Told him this week was a lesson in time management!
Friday - I overslept! Got Josh to Chemistry late. Did a tiny bit of Latin with Sean and Becky. Read Sunday's scripture to them. Sean did a bit of math. Tennis was cancelled due to rain. Josh went to Shakespeare. Sean went over to his friends house again. They'll go together to a church jr high thing that's going on tonight. It's been raining that that couple of days and is supposed to rain through the weekend which is a bummer because Josh is supposed to run his first 5k this Sunday. We'll see.

Sean had a playdate over at his friends house. Josh had his "passing Mass" at his Catholic Life Community. Becky and I went. About 20 boys were moving up into various levels of CLC. Josh is now a full member. Becky and I finished reading through the activity sheets for Aquinas but didn't actually finish them.
Thursday - Aquinas Learning day - things went pretty well; still working out the kinks. Sean did math and Latin and read Journey to the Center of the Earth and then hung out in the library with Josh in the afternoon. Josh did precalculus and Psychology and then worked on Shakespeare homework at the library. Josh had cross country practice. He is really enjoying running so much. Then we got home to find Rick had come home from CA. Pizza night! Then Josh worked on chemistry homework but this time didn't finish his Shakespeare homework. Hmmm. Told him this week was a lesson in time management!
Friday - I overslept! Got Josh to Chemistry late. Did a tiny bit of Latin with Sean and Becky. Read Sunday's scripture to them. Sean did a bit of math. Tennis was cancelled due to rain. Josh went to Shakespeare. Sean went over to his friends house again. They'll go together to a church jr high thing that's going on tonight. It's been raining that that couple of days and is supposed to rain through the weekend which is a bummer because Josh is supposed to run his first 5k this Sunday. We'll see.

What We've Been Up To 9/16/11
Our fall schedule has started up in almost full swing. I know we are just getting acclimated to it, but, whew! Maybe we kinda overdid it.
Monday - Read The Village Blacksmith and The Children's Hour by Longfellow to Becky and Sean. Sean finds him too kitschy. Read about the Mass, The Last Supper and the Paschal Mystery.
Sean and Becky did some math - still review, mostly about reading really big numbers. Sean took a quiz on conjugating the present, imperfect and future of 1st and 2nd conjugation verbs. Did well. Becky had her first American Heritage Girls meeting of the year. She earned a sewing badge (she sewed a hat in 4H last spring) and music performance badge for learning the trumpet and being in a show at music camp this summer. She was very happy to be restarting AHG again. She loves it.
Josh and I had Latin class. We had a quiz to review active and passive verbs in present and perfect systems. I did okay but was a little shaky on a couple of the passive ones. Josh didn't finish the quiz so has to retake it. He says he just blanked on some of it. Josh read some of the play Julius Caesar and did Chemistry homework. He also finally finished the Precalculus he'd started the past Monday (we ran into some snafus) and scanned and sent it to Mr. Owens.
Tuesday - Read more about Physics in Exploring the World of Physics to Becky and Sean. Still talking about Aristotle and Galileo. Did some more math and Latin. In the afternoon took Josh to Chemistry class and Becky to her art class. She was soooo happy to see her friends.
Sean basically just vegged around the house and was bored by the end of the day.
Josh had cross country. He and I worked on Latin homework. We had lots of it plus had to study for another quiz.
Wednesday - Josh and I were crazy busy trying to finish up our Latin which we couldn't do. Yikes! Sean watched the next lesson in Latin for Children. Becky practiced a little penmanship and did a little math.
Latin class again - Josh and I both got A's on our demonstratives quiz. Teacher realized she'd given too much homework and figured out a more equitable policy. Hurrah for fair teachers!
Josh finished reading Julius Caesar.
Wednesday afternoon - I went over to the church where we are holding our Aquinas Learning Center and prepared it as much as I could. Wednesday evening Josh went to CLC. Sean got a long playdate over at his friend's house. He was happy.
Thursday - First day of our Aquinas Learning Center - it went really, really well. The kids were happy and excited. The mentors were real troopers who really muddled through splendidly. Becky loved it so much. The minute she came home she did her IEW and cursive homework! Then when her dad got home that night, she took it out and showed him everything. I was exhausted and had to immediately get Josh to cross country. Sean and Josh are just doing their own thing in an extra room at the church while I run around making sure things are running smoothly and setting/cleaning things up. Josh did his precalc and wrote his essay for his Shakespeare class. Sean did his math and read his science lesson. Sean also helped out with the preschoolers. Then after lunch Sean and Josh went across the street to the library. Sean read another chapter in Journey to the Center of the Earth as well as some book on comedy that he picked up at the library. I'm not sure what Josh did.
I really love that Josh is getting into running. He realizes that spending all his time in front of a computer is not a good thing. He wants to increase his endurance. He says he thinks he's the third fastest running in the group but that he gets winded more easily. So he's just got to work on getting in shape. The coaches (a homeschooling couple) are really super nice. Unfortunately, he 's the only 16 yo boy in the group. There are several girls his age and several younger boys (like 13 or so). But I'm glad Josh isn't letting that bother him.
Another sign that Josh is coming out of his shell. He asked me if we could host a get together for his weekly teen church group. So they are coming over Saturday evening for pizza, pool and video games.
Today (Friday) - I hope to read Sunday's scripture out loud to Becky and Sean and then do Sean's science experiments from Rainbow Science. Also a little math and Latin. Maybe go over the memory sentences from Aquinas Learning. Josh has Chemistry from 8:30 to noon!!! Then he's got Shakespeare from 1 to 3. Becky and Sean have their first tennis class today as well.

What We've Been Up To - 9/8/11
It rained this week! And rained. And rained. And rained. I don't remember anything like this before. Here are some photos I took of the DRY stream bed behind our house. It is rushing into our normally placid little pond.
A 12 yo boy on the other side of the town I live in, was swept to his death when he fell into a swollen stream in his back yard. A terrible tragedy.

Rick had to stay downtown for the night. The traffic was so bad and so many roads were closed that it was taking hours for people to get home.
This was supposed to be our first week of our fall schedule but many things wound up being cancelled.
Monday -Labor Day, Rick was still up in Boston with Will doing their orientation program. I read aloud from a book about the Mass. I'd link to it but I can't seem to get the hang of linking on my Mac.
Also read some Longfellow poetry to Becky and Sean.
Josh worked on Chemistry homework. New this year is that homework is due by e-mail the night before the class. Took Josh to buy running shoes because he's decided to join a local cross country team.
Tuesday -Josh started his on line PreCalculus class with Derek Owens. Rick got home from Boston around 1 p.m. and took the day off. It was nice to have him back. Josh went to Chemistry class. Josh was supposed to start Cross-country practice, but it was cancelled due to rain.
Wednesday - First Latin class for Josh and myself, dragged Becky and Sean along too. Josh went to CLC in the evening. Driving was awful through all the rain.
Thursday - had an Aquinas Learning get together at the church where we'll be holding it. Got to talk to the Pastor and secretary, ironed out some issues, several moms came and helped with final clean up (but I still think I'll need to go in next Wednesday to see if everything is good for our first day next Thursday). The church started flooding because the rain, which had been awful all week and suddenly became the most torrential rain I've ever experienced. It was like someone was dumping buckets from the sky. The minute you stepped out you were completely drenched. They say 2 or more inches were falling per hour! Totalling something like 9+ inches! Incredible. We managed to get home but missed our afternoon obligation. Roads began to flood. It was quite dramatic!
Friday - Josh was supposed to have another Chem class but it is cancelled because the teacher follows the country rules and the county schools are closed due to flooded roads. Josh took the time to sleep in, read Julius Caesar and hopefully will finish up his Psychology for the week. Read Sunday's scripture readings and about St. Peter Claver, whose feast is today, to Sean and Becky. They each did a bit of math and Latin. Sean's been reading Journey to the Center of the Earth and he is actually enjoying it!
Will has called every day. He's homesick and he also caught a cold, so he's feeling a bit crummy.
Heard from Hannah earlier in the week. She likes all her classes and her tiny single dorm room.
It's been an exciting, uncomfortable, wet week. But I am grateful to the cancellations in a way because it gives me another week to ease into the hardcore fall routine we are starting up.

What we've been up to - 9/2/11
I have been ignoring the kids pretty much all week. I've been really consumed by getting our new Aquinas Learning Center up and running. Many phone calls, meetings, e-mails happened this week, even a crisis or two and still there is much more to do. Crazy!
This is Will's last week at home and I've barely seen him. I think he's tamping down his emotions and it is making him quiet and kind of retiring from us all. He's been sleeping in late and staying in his room to practice music. Plus he has lots of little odds and ends stuff to do before he leaves. We all went shopping in the middle of the week to get him clothes and a new razor. He shaved off his beard and got his hair cut on Monday! I think he's planning on letting the beard grow back and he's hoping it will grow in a little thicker. Vain teen-age boy! I grew up with all girls. I didn't know boys worry about their looks too! Today, we are doing laundry, packing and cleaning his room. Yep, we've procrastinated! Tonight we are all going out to dinner. Tomorrow morning he leaves us. Sob.
Josh has been great, trying to get into the swing of things, even though his regular classes haven't started He goes to his first Chemistry class this a.m. He's been working hard on his Psychology course which he seems to be really enjoying so far. He did some more math review and we did a tiny bit of Latin review, but we decided we were going to cram on Monday and Tuesday for those things, as we are too distracted by Will leaving and Aquinas Learning to focus as much as would be ideal. Josh has also continued to go jogging, I love that!
Sean - poor Seano, he is already very sad about Will leaving.. This is going to be tough. I'm still forcing him to finish reading Beorn the Proud. He's been fighting me but today is the last chapter! Next week we start Journey to the Center of the Earth! I do not feel unschoolish at all about this reading thing. It is a troublesome spot. Seano's been going on walks. He and Becky started writing a cartoon together that they are animating. I've got to go see what they are doing. I just hear them down in the basement, giggling, making all kinds of weird sounds and voices which erupt into loud squabbles when there is an artistic difference of opinion. The eruption cools down quickly and they continue on a bit later. Ah, siblings.
Tuesday I took my aunt into the Rehab hospital to get her prosthesis. That's put a new element into her routine. She's really not too happy with it, but she's game to keep trying. She's looked really tired to me this week and seems quieter. I feel like I've somehow neglected everyone this week. . . .
And something I'm really sad about. We will not be able to finish David Copperfield before Will leaves. We are almost at the end (92% through says Will's ipod) but the chapters are so long and we just don't hours to sit and listen. It can take a solid hour to read one chapter out loud! So we are almost done but it is unrealistic to try to finish before Will leaves on Saturday morning. Rick thinks we should finish it up at Thanksgiving, when Will is back again. I guess so.

What We've Been Up To - 8/26/11
It has been quite a week!
We got back from the Outer Banks Saturday.
Spent Sunday and Monday recuperating and packing Hannah up to go back to the University of Dallas.
6:30 a.m. Hannah and her friend left to start the long drive. They drove for 19 hours straight and got to UD at 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time, They packed food to eat along the way and only stopped for bathroom breaks. I so admire Hannah's drive and determination!
Tuesday we had an EARTHQUAKE! I was actually talking to Hannah on the phone. She was in Tennessee by then. I was lying on my bed because I'd had a terribly violent migraine in the morning and still wasn't feeling normal. I thought the dog was leaning against the bed scratching at first, but then it kept up and got stronger. I remarked to Hannah: Wow, either the dog is really scratching hard or . . . and at this point I saw that my bedroom mirror was shaking like crazy. . . we are having an earthquake! I jumped up and said quickly, I gotta get off. We are having an earthquake. The sound of the earthquake/house rattling got really loud then and the floor felt like plane turbulence. I could hear the kids shrieking downstairs: What is it? Is it an earthquake? But by the time I got to my bedroom door, it had stopped. It only lasted about 30 or 35 seconds. Maybe 40. But man, my legs felt like water afterwards! We didn't have any damage except my water cup by my bed fell over. But there was some damage at other places in our area. Thanks be to God, that no deaths or injuries occurred. We've been feeling the occasional aftershock.
Now we are bracing for Hurricane Irene! The weather is very strange outside. It is extremely foggy right now. I can barely see into my backyard. We've stocked up on pop tarts, water, batteries, flashlights and books. We don't need anything else right?
Josh started up his Psychology course of study this week. At the beginning of the week we sat down and planned out the year. He's hoping to take the SAT in March, the AP Pyschology exam in May and the Math SAT II on June 2. He decided not to take the Chemistry SAT II. And we decided not to do the PSAT again. He took it last year and did pretty well. The only reason he'd take it this fall is to qualify for a Merit Scholarship and frankly I don't think I know of anyone personally who has gotten a merit scholarship that way, so it isn't a big incentive for us. And you can only take so many of these stupid tests in a year! It seems every year the College Board (evil organization that it is) heaps more tests and more hoops to jump through if you want a college education! I really hate it.
Josh also did some math review and we both did a bit of Latin review, though not as much as I'd have liked to do!
I sat down with Sean and talked with him about this coming academic year. He wasn't too happy about things. But I think he at least saw my reasoning. He is really going through a valley right now. I must be firm and patient. God help me to be the best mom I can be for him!
Becky has been her usually lively self. Listening to her audiobooks, reading and rereading all her favorite books (Harry Potter, Penderwicks, Percy Jackson). Last night, I really wished my laptop wasn't broken and I could take pictures. She had got out the little bottles of food dye and was creating different colors and experimenting with what green and red make (brownish-black), etc. Then she got into the the recycling and started building things. She took 4 paper towel rolls and a little cardboard berry box that blueberries had come in. She put the berry box like a lid on top of the 4 paper towel rolls (like legs to a table) the structure proved to be really strong. She had me punching it to show me just how strong it was. I commented to her that she was going to be an architect or engineer when she grows up, but she said that she was going to be a professional trumpet player. She loved music camp and learning the trumpet this summer and is all excited to be in a band this coming fall.
Will got to chat with his roommates he'll have at Berklee. He leaves 9/4. Rick is going up with him. Will got really interested in Malcolm X this week and watched the movie and was busy educating himself on the difference between MLK's approach and Malcolm X's. And this tied in with the new memorial downtown (whose unveiling is cancelled due to Irene). Will mowed the lawn for me too. I think that will be his last time for a long time. Josh will be taking over that job!
Movies featured this week, serendipitously: The Music Man (my favorite) and the new Phineas and Ferb movie which has now been watched at least 3 times.
Other sundry stuff. Josh has been jogging! In fact, Josh has really come out of his shell, you know, the one he went into when he was 13! I think going away to work camp and engineering camp as well as our week vacation really matured him. In fact, it is symbolic that Josh's hat, the one he's been hiding under the last couple of years, got so filthy that even Josh noticed just how gross it was. He tried to wash it in the washing machine and it pretty much killed it. So he's stopped wearing hats! And he's become more outgoing, more connected to us, more engaged. He's been a lovely person to be around! Hurrah for growing up!
Yesterday I spent many hours cleaning at the church where we'll hold our Aquinas Learning Center. Things are really gearing up for that. Might go back today and finish up. If the weather allows.

He tried to wash it in the washing machine and it pretty much killed it. So he's stopped wearing hats! And he's become more outgoing, more connected to us, more engaged. He's been a lovely person to be around! Hurrah for growing up!
Yesterday I spent many hours cleaning at the church where we'll hold our Aquinas Learning Center. Things are really gearing up for that. Might go back today and finish up. If the weather allows.
