I've got two authors for the letter V.
Gertrud von Le Fort is someone I just discovered last year, when I read her marvelous The Song at the Scaffold. This book is based on true events that happened during the French Revolution. Here's a review I wrote.
The other author is Maria von Trapp of The Sound of Music fame. She wrote the delightful story of her life in the well loved book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. This book makes a great read aloud for the family. And then you can cap off your read aloud by watching the musical! (Though be aware the actual story is very different from the musical version).
