I swear though there are a number out there that want insurrection. They are consumed with hatred. It's like that meme going around that says something like: Wanting Trump to fail is like hating the pilot and hoping the plane goes down. These people want the plane to go down. I don't think they've thought further than 'get rid of Trump!' Everybody seems so worked up to an hysterical level. And my gosh the impenetrable self-righteousness that has no ability to think critically. Just rage and truisms. And to me it looks like they are playing into Trump's hands. I think he likes to keep everyone provoked. But now we are playing on the big field and we need calm to make sure we are doing what is right. We need to "confirm thy soul in self-control; thy liberty in law," as the lyric from America the Beautiful goes.
This takes me back to the first time I ever questioned my liberal friends. It was the day Reagan got shot. I remember sitting in the lounge of my dorm watching it being replayed over and over. I did not vote for Reagan. I was a true liberal Democrat at that time. I was very critical of him, but I never in a million years wanted him dead. Never. I went to dinner and sat down with my crowd and to my horror they were saying things like they hoped he died and joking about it. I was shaken to my core. I could not believe they were talking like this (this at a Catholic college!). I could only sit there for a few minutes before I had to leave in dismay. It was like someone had pulled the rug out from under me. I suddenly realized I had a completely different perspective but I had foolishly thought we were all on the same page. I think this is why I could work at the Public Defenders office. People would say how can you defend criminals and I'd launch into a speech about how the system prevents mob rule. So many people do not get that it is the system that has been set up to protect us that must be preserved. Rule of law, not rule of men. This is why I am so repulsed by the cult of personality Obama and now Trump is inspiring. Guys, that is how we get totalitarianism!
Anyway, I pray this goes off better than I fear. We need someone like MLK to have moral sway over the protestors so that they are unified and peaceful. But we only have shrieking agitators who have only a vague purpose - to voice how much they hate Trump.
There IS a lot of noise these days, but it is possible (laborious, but possible) to screen it out and focus on the facts. I wonder where you are reading about all this, because most of what I read about for Inauguration Day are small protests or symbolic protests (artist boycotts, closures, not showing up, not watching it on TV, etc). It may be that your news sources are exaggerating (or overemphasizing the bad, ignoring the normal). I haven't seen anything to be worried about. And the one large march has put out a specific platform or mission statement - nothing vague about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, there are many people who hope to see Trump (who is chronically dishonest, larcenous, and maybe even treasonous - so it isn't because they just don't like the guy or that they are Democrats) be impeached. But of course there is a plan other than chaos. Should Trump be forced to leave office, Vice President Pence takes over, all in accordance with the Constitution. That has happened before in our history, and it went off very smoothly. The fact that you are alarmed shows that you are unwittingly falling prey to the propagandistic garbage being spewed by the far Right and by Trump himself: The only alternative to being fully in support of Trump is chaos! Agitators, agitators everywhere! His whole campaign was predicated on fear (which is the main reason I am disgusted that he won), and his Presidency seems to be heading in the same direction.
One last thing - calling Obama admirers a cult is insulting - it implies we had no reasons for admiring him. Many of us, however, admired Obama precisely because of his respect for rule of law, his knowledge of our history and Constitution, and his clear and cogent analysis of our country's issues. That is why the other side referred to him as "Professor" and "Egghead" - and those were the nicer derogatory terms they used. In contrast, our current PEOTUS actually claimed (falsely) that Obama was an illegitimate President. To say (or imply) that these two men and their governing styles and their attitudes toward rule of law are the same is absurd. You are smarter than that. Yet you (along with a lot of other smart people) are falling for what Trump and Breitbart writers and others are feeding the public: Obama was a dictator (or wanted to be one)! His followers were/are unruly mobs! Anyone protesting Trump is a shrieking agitator!
I swear, these false equivalencies that Bannon and his ilk promote scare me more than anything. (Would you believe that I have had people insist to me that the Southern Poverty Law Center is a hate group?) "All news is fake news!" "You can't trust the NYT anymore than you can trust the Enquirer!" I've seen people on my Facebook feed claim that the only thing they trust is Trump's Twitter feed. This didn't happen by accident. This is alarming.
God willing, Pence will end up President within a year and this gaslighting will stop. My gay friends will be out of luck (I actually think they have a better chance under Trump than Pence), but we'd all still be better off. Although nothing will save Medicare from privatization, that's for sure...
Hi Rena, I think you read stuff into what I was saying that I didn't mean. I wasn't equating Trump and Obama as people, I was however saying I don't like the cult of personality they inspire. Once you start making it about the person and not the office.I think it can get dangerous. I never liked Obama much and you and I just have to agree to disagree, but I do think Trump is a whole nother ball of wax, different in kind not degree. I don't actually read Brietbart or watch Fox or anything where they spew alt right wing stuff. I do try to follow a variety of people so I can not live in a bubble, like Van Jones, Jake Tapper, and some never trumpers, some very leftwing environmentalists, etc on twitter. But I probably am exaggerating my fear. This a.m. I had this apocalyptic nightmare inspired by a video I saw of an artist who was painting a huge mural in her own blood to protest Trump. That's nuts! I feel like I can feel the mood of country moving to a really unstable time. I remember thinking just before the Dallas sniper police shootings that something bad was gonna happen. And then omg it did. I want a calm wise leader like MLK. But then even he couldn't hold off the violence, could he? I mean the mood of the country got hugely ugly and murderous then. I still remember the riots after his assassination and I was only 8. Anyway, I always think that we are a razor's edge away from collapse. Smooth transition of power is an anomaly in history, not a certain event. That is why I think it is so important to honor it. We, the people, got ourselves into this Trump hole. He didn't happen in a vacuum. Stuff that has been going for 8 years (and before that) built up to this and gave his grassroots movement the opening they needed. But anyway, I do hope you are right and there will just be some protests, etc. Rick was talking to a partner who is a Republican and that guy said: "This is our first 3rd party president! Who knows what will happen?" I was a NeverTrumper (even though I am not a Republican but have been an independent for many years now), And, btw, the Southern Poverty Law Group is questionable frankly. I think the real problem comes from two different understandings of sexuality. SPLC thinks if you promote the traditional Christian view you are a hate group. It also has condemned dissident Muslim people who are trying to distance Islam from radical Islam. So SPLC is not infallible. Unfortunately it has fallen sway to the current zeitgiest. I do not think agitation is the answer to Trump. I think that is playing into his hands. He thrives on confrontation and division. He's a master at it. I think the calm, cool hand of the law is the best way to deal with him, frankly. I think we need to rally in unity to preserve our government, as imperfect as people in it are right now. I am hoping that with Trump the presidential powers will shrink. I do not like an imperial presidency.
DeleteCorrection, I was 7 at the time of the DC riots.
DeleteI found the #DisruptJ20 protests you were talking about - I don't think these people have ANY IDEA how much security is in place during an Inauguration. They do have a permit for peaceful protest (and it won't be anywhere near where the Capitol building); anything else should be dealt with pretty swiftly. I just looked up the 2000 Inauguration - there were thousands of protestors, then, also. And some weren't so pleasant - I believe there was an egg thrown at the Presidential limo. I doubt protestors will be allowed anywhere near the parade route this time, though. I would be more worried about lone actors, myself. I mean, if you NEED something to worry about...
ReplyDeleteIt would not be honest to diminish how very obnoxious many right wingers were under Obama. They were/are disgusting in their hatred. And scary too.

ReplyDeleteHi, it's Lisa! I remember you calling me from college when Reagan was shot, I was terrified of Reagan too, that he would start a nuclear war, but I, nor most other people, didn't want him to die. Everyone was upset that the president had been shot! I remember how shaken up you were by your friends, but I also remember thinking "really, someone wants him to die?" In other words, I was one of your liberal friends at the time, and I wasn't on that train. I imagine it was just typical arrogant teenaged posturing on their part anyhow. But that phone conversation always stayed with me - you were super upset, rightly so! Don't worry too much about the crazies, there's always a few who want to take things too far - never forget, "free charles manson"!
DeleteLisa, I did not remember that I called you! I always remember how that incident jarred my world. Thank you for being a voice of sanity back then! These were smart kids that I really admired, I think that is why it felt like such a punch in the gut. Wow, that is great you remember that I called you. I hope you are right about the crazies! I am definitely praying for peace right now.
DeleteBtw I am still critical of a lot of Reagan's policies. I get really annoyed by the way conservatives have practically given him sainthood. Blech. I am happy about the Berlin wall, but there was a ton of bad stuff going on at the same time. And I always felt like poor Jimmy Carter got the raw end of the deal with the hostage crisis and then the Ayatollah releasing them on Reagan's first day (isn't that the way it happened?).
