The Confession - Book 33

Another mystery by Mary Roberts Rinehart. These books are like potato chips to me. Can't read just one! The Confession is similar to The Circular Staircase in many ways. It starts off with a very similar premise. A spinster aunt takes a house for the summer, mystery ensues! It is told in the first person by said spinster, there is a loving nephew who comes to visit (In the Circular Staircase a niece and nephew were both living with the spinster aunt) and the spinster aunt has a funny, antagonistic relationship with her long time housekeeper. But there the similarities end. Miss Agnes Blakesfield takes the house for the summer under peculiar circumstances; the rent was so low, she at first declined because she thinks something must be wrong with the house. But the little old lady renting it out, Miss Emily, begs her to take it. So she does. From the start though things are spooky. An unidentifiable fear overcomes our narrator; the telephone keeps ringing at night but no one is on the other end. Someone keeps burning candles at night or moving things around, even when everyone is sure no one's been about. And why does Miss Emily keep visiting for tea and then finding excuses to snoop around the house? Things get murkier and murkier. Suspense builds. Then the confession is found, but the narrator can not believe little old Miss Emily could have done such a horrible deed.

A charming quick read! For more book reviews go to Read 52 Books in 52 Weeks.
